    Re-Imagining Martyrs’ Square

Martyrs’ Square has long been Tripoli’s symbolic heart—a coastal plaza where national events, family outings and everyday commerce converge beneath the Mediterranean sky. Today the square is undergoing a sensitive regeneration that blends heritage preservation with contemporary public-realm design. More than a makeover, the project sets out to improve well-being, strengthen social cohesion and catalyse local enterprise. Below we explore how smart placemaking, cultural programming and stakeholder engagement combine to transform the square into a vibrant “community living room” for residents and visitors alike.

    Honouring History While Looking Forward

Tripoli’s main plaza has been a stage for everything from independence celebrations to weekend markets. The new design retains the axial sightlines to the Red Castle and waterfront while refreshing stone paving, lighting and seating with durable, regionally sourced materials. Original palm rows are supplemented by drought-tolerant shade trees, creating a micro-climate that invites longer dwell times without compromising the square’s historic openness.

    People-First Urbanism

    Safe, Walkable Edges

Traffic-calming measures divert through-cars to perimeter streets, allowing the square’s eastern and southern edges to operate as pedestrian priority zones. Kerbs are replaced with flush transitions, ensuring barrier-free movement for wheel-chair users, parents with strollers and older citizens.

    Layered Public Spaces

Waterfront Terraces connect the square to the promenade via gentle steps that double as amphitheatre seating for student performances and pop-up film nights.

The Grand Plaza remains open for civic gatherings and seasonal events.

Neighbourhood Gardens on the western flank provide lawns, play structures and shaded reading corners.

    Well-Being & Active Lifestyles

Daily Movement – A 1-kilometre soft-surface loop around the plaza perimeter supports jogging and walking clubs; distance markers encourage incremental fitness goals.

Mindful Pause – Elevated seating decks overlook the harbour, offering calm zones for prayer, meditation or simply watching the sunset.

Inclusive Play – Modular equipment blends traditional swings with sensory play panels. Rubberised surfaces reduce injury risk, and adjacent benches allow caregivers easy supervision.

    Economic & Cultural Activation

Week-End Makers’ MarketAffordable kiosk system for local artisans; boosts micro-enterprise and tourist spend.
Seasonal Food FestivalsCelebrates Libyan cuisine; drives footfall after office hours.
Open-Air Art RotationsPartnering with universities, the plaza becomes a gallery for emerging talent, reinforcing civic pride.

Leases are intentionally short-term and low-cost to lower barriers for start-ups and ensure a constantly changing visitor experience.

A Plaza for the Next Generation

By weaving together heritage, well-being and inclusive commerce, the Martyrs’ Square project positions Tripoli’s civic heart for the demands of a twenty-first-century Mediterranean city. As construction phases roll out, we remain committed to co-creating programming that reflects community aspirations ensuring the square thrives not just as a tourist snapshot but as an everyday anchor for urban life.
